Hard Times - Andrew Ferreira

Day 1 - Into the Fray

As our parents leave we are all conflicted with a number of emotions such as excitement, fear and anticipation. We “boys” did not know what to expect but we realised fast that this would not be an easy thing but rather quite a hard course

This will be our first day of Quest.

Day 2 - The “Beep” test

Waking up for the first time was a confusing and hard.  Waking up so early left people a’ bit shaken and really tired but with the crack of the whip we all managed to get ourselves to breakfast. Little did we know we were in for a big challenge.

Everyone has just realised how unfit they were and everyone that participated in the “Beep” test were not expecting it to be so hard but we managed to pull through. Way to go boys!!!

After all the congratulations on managing the fitness test everyone was shocked to find out that we had cross-country that afternoon. We would be running in the Falcon College inter-house competition!! On the whole we did not do well in this event, and took some flak from Mr Schultz when more than half the group decided to portray “team spirit” by running with the slowest member, who at this point happens to be very slow. He pointed out to us that being “assisted” by so many did not make any difference to the pace and we learnt the difference between team work and ducking from PT.

Day 3 – The Gym!!

This was to be our first morning of gym. We were all up by 5:00 am and on our way to be pushed to the extreme by Mrs. Stone. Her gym session was interesting and it stretched muscles to the limit they had never been stretched before

We all left the gym in a hurry because we had to be back for lectures and all sorts. We eventually finished the day with a triumphant feeling.

Day 4 – Iron Will Training

On day four we started Iron Will practice. In the morning we all woke up to get ready to ride 30 kilometres and then go hiking and camping. The bike ride was not an easy task as we were all tired. It was a long ride considering it was our first ride of the course but most managed it in the end.

The hike, to our campsite, was later in the afternoon. When we got there we had an interesting turn of events when Mark Worsley-Worswick blew up his gas canister and cooker because he did not screw it on properly. It nearly destroyed a few tents along the way. It showed the true genius of the new Quest intake of 2012

Day 5- The Team

The hike back was interesting as it really brought the “men” together. We went camping as individuals and arrived back as a team. The hike made most other exercises look like nothing as it was an endless fast paced walk in one of the hardest terrains we have encountered yet, but we managed to hold together and we eventually got back at lunchtime. When we arrived back we got a brief lecture from Alistair Banks, our Iron Will facilitator, before he departed back for Harare.

Day 6 – Finally, relax time!!

Saturday was more of a rest day and we mostly worked on our own projects and relaxed.  We all went for a very early swim at 5:30 in the morning which no-one had adjusted to yet.

Apart from lectures and some cricket at Falcon, we did not do much and the rest of the day turned out to be very uneventful.

Day 7 - Amazing meals

Our well-anticipated relaxing Sunday turned into a hard run with lots of exercise, resulting in plenty of tired and short fused people arriving back from the run.

Later that evening we managed to watch a movie and special thanks went out to the cooks for their amazing meals. Well-done chaps it was some of the most amazing food we have eaten.
