Hard Times - Andrew Ferreira

Day 1 - Into the Fray

As our parents leave we are all conflicted with a number of emotions such as excitement, fear and anticipation. We “boys” did not know what to expect but we realised fast that this would not be an easy thing but rather quite a hard course

This will be our first day of Quest.

Day 2 - The “Beep” test

The Wildlife - Transformation

Here at quest we live in the bush for ten months and I would definitely say that I have a passion for the outdoors. It’s stunning and breath-taking at times. My first impression of the Zimbabwean wilderness as I got off the plane was bleak, it was hot but I was still keen to see it! On the drive to Quiet Waters I saw spans of dry, harsh and uninviting bush.

Victoria Falls and countdown to graduation.

The Pathfinder bus proved the perfect transport to Victoria Falls and like every other trip we saw abundance wildlife en route. We arrived in the early afternoon and set up our tents in the rest camp with much excitement and anticipation for an amazing week to come. There would be work; there would be play and a birthday party.

Just another week at Quest

By Kirsty Butchart

This week has been quite a productive one, lots of highs and lows had by all. We have dabbled in several areas, such as fencing, plumbing and game capture. As well as having a few less pleasant situations like air locked water pipes, a few scary incidents with “wrangling” bushbuck and two near arrests by immigration… lots of lessons learned.

So here’s a little more detail on a couple of the experiences this week-

Game Catching and Guinea Fowl incidents

Week 6

A sleep-in this Monday morning was more than welcomed especially as we didn’t have the sound of our alarms going off at 5am for a gym session. Instead we had a relaxed morning as we were all exhausted and our bodies were aching from the long night of fire-fighting the previous night.

We packed for yet another adventure, this one to Cawston Game Ranch…

My First Impressions

12/10/2011

As the sand beneath the tyres made our entrance known,

And the sound of nervousness, clearly heard in my tone.

I had expected jungle gym, swimming pools and ropes.

Just to find a calm, so serene and beautiful,

A place, a feeling only dreamt of, full of hopes.

The first swim, the first gym class, the first run.

The morning breeze stung my cheeks as I watched the rising sun.

The first impressions that continue to carry on.

Binga here we come...

Week 3 Blog

Binga!

After an early breakfast and ensuring all our bags were packed we were en route to Binga, which is situated on the shores of Lake Kariba.   We finally arrived at Binga at seven o’clock in the evening, after spending seven hours on a bus we all immediately went for a swim in the pool.

Initiation Week

28 September 2011

The first day we all arrived and met everyone as they finished their first walk to Falcon College. It was interesting to meet all the people from different backgrounds that I hadn’t previously been exposed to.  Most were Zimbabweans, one Englishman, a South African and two ladies from Australia and New Zealand respectively.

‘Think of it not as the beginning of the end, but rather the end of the beginning…’

As we grind inexorably toward the end of the programme there is a bag of mixed emotions.  As always when coming to the end of something there is a plethora of ‘lasts’; last Monday, last Tuesday in the gym, last Sunday afternoon chilling with  mates…  A myriad of thoughts is now passing through each young man’s ear lobes at warp speed whilst trying to relive every moment and savour the final vestiges of brotherhood before it is time to say farewell and move onto the next chapter in their young lives.
