With the Men’s Core having had a very busy week trying to get their projects finished off before heading to Botswana, the ‘blog’ writers haven’t quite made it this week! However this week cannot go unmentioned. Long days of building, welding, clearing, filming and collecting chickens filled the week. Then on a very chilly Friday morning at 4.30am, 5 different groups headed off on what has come to represent the culmination of their fitness training over the 7 months… The Grand Challenge. This one was even ‘grander’ than before. They started wrapped in layers of warm clothes, gloves, head torches etc cycling to Diana’s Pools from Quest, a mere 38km. From there they then hiked across to Mtshebezi Dam, 18km, arriving early afternoon (and late evening for one group!) where they canoed around to the dam wall(1.5km), and abseiled 50.5m off the wall. They then paddled back to the campsite for a well earned early night. Early the next morning the group set off from the base of the dam wall on a 21km run to Lumane Falls. It was a beautiful crisp morning with long shadows across the road shrinking as the sun crept higher, and the temperature rose. However with plenty of water points and a lot of excellent grit and determination, the group completed the route in a very reasonable time. We returned to Quest in time for the lads to ‘re-fuel’ and shower before going over to Falcon to watch the rugby matches against Peterhouse. It was a good end to another ‘Questful’ week.
