Matt Stanford – My Quest Experiences

Quest Africa Zimbabwe

I always knew I was never set to go straight into university after school. Yet I could never come up with a good way to spend my gap year until I came across something called quest Africa. I had never heard of it but when I searched it up it made me realize that this is me, this is what I want to do in my time.

I decided to come to Zimbabwe because getting out of South Africa and into another country and going to the places offered would be so valuable to me. The experiences I have had and the skills I have already learnt have set me in a good solid start for my life. My life, I have realized will value from this course in many different ways.

We are only halfway through our course and we have learnt skills such as welding, plumbing, electrics, building and much more. We have not just learnt these skills but put them to good use in and around our headquarters, Quiet Water conservation area. The physical part of this experience is great. Every morning we have PT session, always a good way to start the day.

We have cycled through the East Matopos, which I found to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. Mining for half a week down Farvic mine was probably one of the toughest experiences to date, yet so valuable and I can honestly say that I have new respect for miners. Farming is how I grew up and seeing the different methods out here are so interesting. Our travels took us up to Lake Kariba for a week, which was spent fishing, making movies and learning about anti-pouching. We also spent a week on the Zambezi where we put our skills to the test and built a house, a green house and did maintenance in and around the lodges. Fishing along the Zambezi has always been a dream of mine and it has come true. We had the opportunity to paddle down the Zambezi and go on game walks.

The friends made and experiences we have had together will bind us for life. I have personally made many friends for life from all over the world. We are all excited as in the coming weeks we are heading up to lake Malawi for three weeks.

This course is truly valuable to me and will be to anyone who comes. It makes dreams come true even ones you didn’t know you had. It gives you experiences you could not imagine. It makes you realize the value and beauty in everything.

I recommend this course to all guys and girls in and around Cape Town who want something different or something to set you on the right path for a better future.
